In my article Disinformation and the art of Critical thinking , I outlined a four point test to apply to any writing claiming to expose the truth about Sept 11. I gave examples 1 2 of articles which pass this test and examples of those which do not. 1 2 In this article I am going to write my own pile of completely fabricated garbage just to show how easily this can be done if one is brazen enough to publish it as a serious work. In order to do this, I have studied the techniques of three notable exponents of this art. Tom Flocco, Karl Schwarz and Mike Ruppert You can go to almost any article written by any of these three and find that it contains no verifiable sources and depends entirely upon your trust. All of them continually allude to “sources” and “documents “without linking to them, and sometimes not even telling you what they are purported to be, and imply that they have personally penetrated the darkest inner circles of the Govt and intelligence agencies to reveal stunning information which will rock the world order to its foundations. Below I have linked a selected example from each writer. There are plenty of alternative media sites on the web eager to lap up this kind of rubbish and give it star billing. One of the worst offenders is Rense.com , although occasionally it publishes some better quality material, probably by accident Here are a few hints for how to make up your own pile of garbage and get a site like Rense to run it. 1. No sources from anything checkable in the public domain are to be used. 2. There should be some kind of hero in the story - someone who knows more than anyone else and is risking career, life and limb to reveal it. 3. The story should strongly imply that justice for the evil doers is about to take its course through the legal system, so all you have to do is cheer and donate. 4. The alleged facts and sources should be vague that nobody can specifically identify a tangible "error" as such. 5. The story should preferably comprise one hero interviewing another hero about what a third hero told them, so that when the story fades away or busts, its difficult to point the finger at anyone specifically. So I decided to take one of my serious research articles and spin it’s basic findngs a different way, to make it a hit with the alternative media. In Nov 2003 I published an article revealing records from the US Bureau of transportation statistics which say that that the allegedly hijacked American airlines flights 11 and 77 didn't even exist, not having been scheduled to fly that day. I didn't have to hack any databases, or have any clandestine meetings with sunglass wearing informers fearing for their lives, or even do an FOI request. I simply found the information on an official but somewhat obscure BTS website, one which simply hadn’t been noticed before by Sept 11 researchers, and linked to it in the article. The information was almost universally ignored and occasionally attacked by the fake “truth”: movement. This is because I stuck to the correct research protocols of providing authentic sources which are easily accessible and checkable in the public domain and don’t require anyone to trust the author. They would have given it top billing if instead, I’d repackaged the claim Flocco/Schwarz/Ruppert style, in alluding to mysterious “sources” and brave whistleblowers in danger, coming forward to tell their story under the cover of anonymity to the fearless internet journalist. So here is the story redone as you might expect from Tom Flocco. BEGIN STORY FAA WHITLEBLOWER SCANDAL ROCKS WASHINGTON. In a sensational development this week, the Bush administration is being rocked by testimony from an FAA whistleblower that two of the hijacked Sept 11 flights were not those which have been officially named as being involved. The information is so sensitive that the major networks are refusing to run the story, but this office has it on good authority that a grand jury has been quietly convened in order to look into the claims by a former top FAA official that the naming of the American airlines flights 11 and 77 as hijacked flights is incorrect because it is possible that no such flights even existed on the day. The story has been followed by veteran investigator Karl Schwarz who has had a series of meetings with the whistleblower - who is currently in a witness protection program. Schwarz, who has attended most of the Jury hearings spoke to me from Acid Rain Springs where he is on the campaign trail. TF. Tell me Karl, exactly how did this story break ? KS. Well Tom, a staff member who was working at Logan airport on Sept 11 noticed certain anomalies which led her to believe that the plane she saw take off may not have been flight 11. She spoke to senior management about her observations but became frustrated with what she called "stalling tactics", when 18 months later, no-one from senior management had contacted her. So, because she had heard of my interest in 9/11 issues, she contacted my office to express her concerns to me, and I chased up some old contacts of mine in the FAA, from the days when I had aircraft manufacturing contracts with the army. I arranged for a meeting between the Logan employee and one of my contacts at the FAA. After she had described what she saw that day, my contact made enquiries within the FAA for certain documents relating to flight records. He said that they were "very reluctant" to hand them over but there was no protocol for them to deny the documents to someone in his position. When he went through the documents, he found several entries for American airlines which indicated serious concerns over the identities of not just one of its flights that morning, but two. He found similar anomalies relating to Flight 77 from Dulles. He went to Dulles and spoke with airport staff there, and they reported similar concerns to that expressed the employee at Logan regarding flight 11. TF: Do these documents obtained from FAA give any indication which flights were put in place of the supposed 11 and 77 ? KS. We are currently attempting to subpoena more documents from both the FAA and American airlines in an attempt to confirm suspicions which we have in this direction. We believe we know what the flights were, but at this stage we are still waiting for the documents in question. TF: Have the FAA and AA been cooperative in the enquiry? KS: You know Tom, this is supposed to be a grand jury with powers of subpoena, but justice and the rule of law in this country has become a joke under the Bush administration. They have fought us every step of the way on this, and I've had to pull two of my top people off the campaign trail to work on this around the clock to make sure that we get the answers which we are entitled to get under the law. TF: And the FAA official who brought all this to light had to go into a witness protection program ? KS: That's right. I think that there are certain people who would have been happy to have seen him thrown to the wolves, but they know that I still have so many other contacts in the FAA from my aircraft sales days, that they figure a softly, softly approach will keep it under wraps better than playing hardball. TF: And what about the Airport employees who first brought all this light ? KS: We've taken meticulous steps to keep their identity hidden, and there'll be no need for them to be involved again, until this actually results in indictments and they may be called as witnesses. End story It took me about 20 minutes to make up and write this pile of totally fabricated garbage, but read almost any article by Flocco, Schwarz or Ruppert and you’ll see the similarities. |
